English table tennis turns Asia into a laboratory: Hursey teams up with Shi Xunyao, Jarvis faces Matsushima

Tom Jarvis and Anna Hursey are stepping into consecutive WTT events in Asia with mixed draws. At WTT Champions Macao, Jarvis, world No. 45, will face world No. 3 Sora Matsushima in the first round. Macao and China Smash are close enough for the team to train at the National Centre and use the matches as high-level data collection. For Jarvis, facing Matsushima early is a difficult test, but a useful benchmark. For Hursey, the doubles partnership offers elite tactical exposure, especially in close-table play and service return. There is also contrarian risk: doubles success does not automatically improve singles ranking, and the demanding schedule must be managed carefully. Yet the bigger goal is development, not immediate results.
