Oscar Piastri dropped three places at Monza, losing third on the grid to Charles Leclerc

Monza, Italy – Oscar Piastri will start the 2026 Italian Grand Prix from sixth place instead of third after being handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding Liam Lawson during Q2. Piastri, driving for McLaren, ended qualifying with the third-fastest time in Q3. However, in Q2, he was investigated for holding up Lawson's Red Bull at the first chicane. As a result, Charles Leclerc was promoted to third, Lewis Hamilton moved up to fourth, and Max Verstappen will start fifth. According to the stewards' statement, Piastri was warned over the radio when leaving the pits: “Verstappen, Lawson and Sainz just crossing. He slowed significantly and stayed to the right to let Verstappen pass, but could not avoid impeding Lawson, who was close behind. The stewards accepted that Piastri had no other options available with the information he had, but still concluded: “Inadvertently and unnecessarily, the driver of Car 81 impeded Car 30. The standard penalty of a drop of three grid positions is imposed.” Piastri explained in the post-qualifying press conference: “I was coming out of the pits, and the speed difference coming out of the pits is so big here, so I don't really know where he came from.” The penalty is a significant blow for McLaren. Piastri drops from third to sixth, directly behind Max Verstappen, meaning he will have to fight Red Bull from the very start. Monza is a track known for high speeds and overtaking opportunities, but to return to the podium, Piastri must overtake three cars ahead: Verstappen, Hamilton, and Leclerc. Piastri admitted the situation was confusing because from the pit exit it is difficult to judge the distance and speed of approaching cars. It also serves as a warning for teams about how to manage radio information for cars leaving the pits during qualifying, especially at tracks with strong slipstream effects like Monza. Piastri's penalty also changes the starting grid picture. Charles Leclerc, despite lacking the pace of the leaders, will have a chance to fight for a podium from third place at Ferrari's home race. Lewis Hamilton also benefits, moving up to fourth. Meanwhile, the big story of Monza this year is Pierre Gasly taking his first career pole position for Alpine. Ferrari, by contrast, has disappointed again, failing to challenge the front-runners on their home soil. Sunday's race promises plenty of strategic intrigue, and Piastri could still capitalize if those ahead make mistakes in the braking zones at the first chicane.
