2026 Chess Olympiad Schedule: India Defends Double Title, Sindarov Faces Gukesh on Home Soil

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has officially announced the schedule for the 46th Chess Olympiad, to be held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from September 1 to 14, 2026. This year's event carries special significance as India, the reigning champion in both the Open and Women's sections, will have to defend its titles away from home. At the same time, the showdown between reigning world champion Gukesh Dommaraju and challenger Javokhir Sindarov – also the host nation's top player – promises to add a dramatic layer to the tournament. The schedule is based on the Swiss system with 11 rounds and a single rest day after round 6. Specifically, rounds 1 to 6 are played consecutively from September 1 to 6, followed by a rest day on September 7, and then rounds 7 to 11 from September 8 to 12.
